AMN Healthcare

AMN Healthcare Services, Inc. has evolved from its humble beginnings as a regional travel nursing staffing company to become a leader in healthcare workforce solutions. Founded in 1985 as American Mobile Nurses, the company initially focused on addressing the serious national nursing shortage by placing travel nurses. Over the past four decades, AMN Healthcare has significantly expanded its services and reach, adapting to the changing needs of the healthcare industry.

AMN is now the nation's largest medical staffing firm, generating nearly $3 billion in revenue in 2024.

AMN Leadership

Cary Grace assumed the role of President and Chief Executive Officer of AMN Healthcare Services, Inc. (AMN) on November 28, 2022, succeeding long-time leader Susan Salka. With over 30 years of experience in developing and executing successful growth strategies for leading global financial and professional service organizations, Grace brought a wealth of expertise to her leadership role within AMN Healthcare.

Grace is known for her transformational leadership style and focus on technology and innovation, partnerships, inclusion and sustainability.

Technology and Innovation: She emphasizes the role of technology in shaping better healthcare outcomes and is driving AMN's efforts to leverage AI for predicting shift needs and providing labor market analytics.

Partnerships: Grace stresses the importance of building strong, trust-based partnerships that create shared value for organizations and communities.

Diversity and Inclusion: She is a passionate advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace and the community.

Sustainability: Under Grace's leadership, AMN Healthcare has made significant progress in talent diversity, healthcare access, governance excellence, and reducing environmental impact.

Grace’s approach drives AMN to consider all components of the healthcare ecosystems when supporting their client's goals:

“We’re focused on how we support our clients and be their partner in the mission of care,” Grace says, “[how we] help them find more innovative, sustainable, high-quality, and affordable ways to be able to build their workforce.”

Grace is guiding AMN Healthcare through a period of significant industry transformation, helping partners and clients address ongoing healthcare staffing shortages and lingering challenges brought forth by the pandemic.

The AMN Solution

Over the past four decades, AMN Healthcare has significantly expanded its services and reach, adapting to the changing needs of the healthcare industry by building solutions that support the flexibility and transparency healthcare facilities expect.

An example of this innovation is WorkWise, a comprehensive workforce management and talent-sourcing technology suite launched In October 2024. WorkWise streamlines workforce processes, enabling healthcare systems to source talent efficiently while managing costs.

This is achieved by combining: predictive scheduling, automated workforce management, AI-enhanced clinician engagement, and integrated internal systems for healthcare organizations.

WorkWise provides optimization for all job types (permanent, per diem, contract), internal and external talent sourcing, cost reduction, and precise staffing need predictions. With features that automate workflow and provide analytics for workforce management, the system helps healthcare organizations fulfill staffing needs more efficiently.

The AMN Impact on the Staffing Industry

By continually evolving its services, embracing technology, and addressing emerging healthcare workforce challenges, AMN Healthcare has significantly shaped the staffing industry's trajectory, setting new standards for comprehensive workforce solutions in healthcare.

Last year, Grace noted that AMN has been instrumental in working with clients to help them rebuild sustainable workforces and accelerate innovation.

“We invested heavily in our growth opportunities with more than $100 million of capex while rigorously managing financial discipline in operations,” she said. “We are consolidating our businesses under our One AMN branding and platform initiative and building a unified, client-centric sales and service organization.”

This operational focus is only one example of why AMN is valued within the healthcare staffing industry. The company was recently recognized with the 2025 Best in KLAS Scheduling: Nurse & Staff award for its predictive analytics and scheduling software solution, Smart Square, which combines workforce demand forecasting with scheduling capabilities and business intelligence tools.

With strong leadership and a track record of high performance, AMN continues to be influential within healthcare staffing. From healthcare facilities to talent and peer organizations, AMN is a trusted brand with the unique ability to not only withstand industry challenges but also shape healthcare staffing.
